Learning in later life: characteristics, issues, exemplars and benefits - Glasgow, October 16th, 2018

This seminar explores the character of learning in later life from varied perspectives. What are defining features of learning in later life? What issues for stakeholders loom beneath the surface? What might constitute exemplars of practice in this field in an international context? What benefits is it possible to strongly link to learning in later life? These and related questions form the basis of this seminar which will combine presentation of ideas from the seminar leader and views from participants through constructive dialogue.

Reconstructions of Adult Education: An invitation

November 2019 will mark an important educational centenary: the publication of the Ministry of Reconstruction’s Final Report on Adult Education. The report, largely authored by R.H. Tawney, set the groundwork for liberal adult education in Britain for the rest of the 20th century. Its centenary is, we believe, a vital opportunity to reflect on the needs and possibilities for adult education today.

I had the pleasure of attending and presenting a keynote of the topic of Big Data and Adult Education at the Fifth International Conference on Adult Education, Education for values – continuity and context, which was held in Iasi, Romania – April 25th–27th, 2018 and Chisinau, Moldova - April 27th–28th, 2018 under the overall leadership of Prof. Laurențiu Șoitu, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, University of Iasi.

Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Learning - Visit 15-18 March 2018

CR&DALL Director for Europe, Mike Osborne, and PASCAL Associate Director for Europe, Roberta Piazza, were delighted to be hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Learning (SMILE) and its director Professor Jian Huang from 15-18 March 2018. During that time, they discussed a number of areas of potential collaboration including assessment of the regional engagement role of Technical and Vocational Education Colleges in Shanghai.

New Project: Widening Regional Engagement of HE and TVET

The aims of this project funded under the aegis of an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account are to:

  • Support further work to review and enhance a template to map the engagement of universities with their cities and regions for use in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector in Hong Kong, Italy and the UK
  • Adapt a revised benchmarking tool to create an online version; and
  • Promote its use nationally and in an international context.

New Project: Exchanging knowledge with policymakers and marginalised youth about skill training in India

In recent years, both India and Scotland have made an extensive investment in skill training and education to reduce the unemployment of marginalised youth and enabling their social and occupational mobility (ILO, 2011, 2016). This knowledge exchange project funded through an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account, comprising of a workshop (India) and a seminar (Glasgow), offers an important and timely opportunity for policy makers, practitioners, and academics from India and Scotland to share experiences, develop understandings, and participate in dialogue to provide evidence for the policies and infrastructures that need to be developed and implemented to facilitate the positive engagement of young people in skill training programmes.
